I thought it might be important for some to know something about my character before joining us for this Dead Disciple Society.

Here are a few fun facts about my character:

I am a person who likes to challenge the status quo, take risks, dream big dreams, and believe in the greatness locked within people. I spend countless hours in reflection and introspection on the joys and perils of the world we live in.

I became an entrepreneur as a kid with a paper route, selling garden seeds door-to-door, and running a lemonade stand. All of these led to starting a house painting business to finance my college education.

I like some things more than others: college sports over pro sports, live theater over prime-time television, dogs more than snakes, hot apple pie with ice cream instead of cold apple pie, and chicken and noodles instead of anything else.

Some famous people I have met include John Glenn, President Bill Clinton, President George H.W. Bush, Bob Schul, Archie Griffin, Tony Campolo, and Leonard Sweet. We even attended President Barack Obama’s inauguration because we wanted to be part of history.

There were times I was almost arrested: leading a group of teens on an active runaway in Montego Bay, Jamaica; leading a protest rally in midtown Manhattan; transporting unsecured plywood in a pickup truck in Tijuana, Mexico; and unlawfully entering a church building in NYC, just to name a few.

Sherri and I have traveled to over thirty countries on five continents—sometimes seemingly by just throwing a dart at a map on the wall.

We have rehabbed, rented, or flipped six homes and will someday finish our 40-year project of restoring our 1860s home.

I know a lot about woodworking, running, and building teams—but very little about golf or how to become a millionaire.

I didn’t make it to seminary graduation, but I decided that if the original twelve disciples didn’t graduate either, then maybe I could find alternative ways to learn.

For the past 50 years, I have talked myself in and out of gathering a group of people in the month of January to begin the year together by setting goals. I don’t know if this is curable, but I keep believing there is a small percentage of people who want to dream big!

Memo to the Future

“The future unfolds, with or without us, it’s never too late to start again.”

The next time you make excuses for yourself, remind yourself of your potential, your dreams, and those who are counting on you. Don’t let the Dead Disciples Society move forward without you. Take stock of your future today and make a decision that it is time to seriously go after your dreams.

Who should consider?

  • Serious high school and college students to senior citizens – men and women.

  • Those tired of making excuses for themselves.

  • Many needing motivation, inspiration, and techniques to enhance their spiritual journey.
